Concerning Bali Missions 2020

by Apr 25, 2020

Dear Missions Team and Parents,

I want to thank you for your graciousness and patience for the mission team leadership (and Bayview elders) as we prayerfully thought and prayed through the status of this summer’s mission trip to Bali.

We have waited as long as possible to make a decision, hoping for better news. But as of today, we will need to postpone our Bali mission trip to next summer. We have made this decision for the following reasons:

  1. Traveling Bans. First, our route to Manila through Philippine Airlines (PAL) is closed. Manila is closed to all travel, and PAL is not opening its doors until May 15. Our travel agent suggests that we go through an appeal process (now) so that we can get a full refund on our tickets. Second, as of today, if we did try a different route, Bali has restricted travel from any infected areas, and will not be accepting travel from places like Guam until further notice. (Countries like Australia have been banned from traveling to Bali until the end of 2020 or the beginning of 2021).
  2. Raising Funds. We were scheduled to have our last fundraiser on May 5, but the Guam government banned all “non-essential” gatherings until the end of May. This prevents receiving the money and support needed for this trip.
  3. Preparation. As leadership, we desired for each team member to be in the process of training up to this point. Missionary Steve Stinnette and I were planning to give cross-cultural and logistics training needed for the trip. These training sessions would not be able to happen until the beginning of June, which is too close to our desired travel date.

Unfortunately, we are not the only missions trip canceled this summer. Many churches and mission organizations have had to make similar decisions these past weeks.

As Bayview staff, I want to reassure you that we are still passionate about missions and discipleship. And we are excited to take this Bali trip as the Lord allows. We trust in our Sovereign God, who knows all things and is working even through our disappointments. God is still on the move!

We know many of you may have questions. Please do not hesitate to communicate with me if you have any concerns.

With grace and peace,

Mel Hennegan
